The Voyagers CLUB UPDATE
The c-NAMMs Expedition wrapped its second sampling site on 8 February in calm seas, roughly 1,000 nautical miles southeast of Ensenada. From there, R/V Robert Gray made stops in Puerto Vallarta and Zihuatanejo for passport control and final provisioning before heading further south.
Current Status & Next Steps
Anchored in warm, calm conditions, the crew enjoyed a few days to reset. Highlights included humpback whales breaching alongside the ship and frigate birds soaring overhead. Our next sampling will be conducted at the next 1,000-mile interval near El Salvador.
This expedition leg was marked by the privilege of carrying The Explorers Club Flag #76, a symbol of exploration history dating back to 1937. Originally flown by Capt. Ernest Fox during a geology expedition across Afghanistan, the flag has accompanied groundbreaking journeys across every continent.
Fox's expedition helped reveal the region’s geological wealth and historic importance to the Silk Road. He would go on to serve in WWII and dedicate his life to exploration and diplomacy. His legacy joins a distinguished list of explorers and scientists who have carried Flag 76 in the name of discovery.
Today, we are proud that our microbe survey joins this lineage. Our path forward follows a legacy of geological and ecological research, from Afghanistan to Greenland to narwhal and giraffe studies. We are deeply honored to contribute to this extraordinary history.
The Voyagers Club also proudly flies flags from The Adventurers Club of Los Angeles, the GAC, and of course, our own.
