More than a company, the “club” is a growing community of ocean-minded explorers. We proudly collaborate with partners like The Explorers Club and Greenwater Foundation to inspire and protect our natural world.
About The Vessel
R/V Robert Gray
ABOUT THE VESSEL
Originally built in 1936 by the Army Corps of Engineers as a military vessel, R/V Robert Gray, is truly one-of-a-kind. The vessel is, in essence, a floating museum bridging history and adventure. Her overall design aesthetic is ruggedly authentic and still retains almost all of her original features. She has been awarded many national levels of recognition, including being listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Just a few of the ship’s contributions include: the navigation and charting of the Columbia River and Alaskan Coastline, engagement during World War II in the Aleutian Islands, Japanese mine sweeping in the Bering Sea, exploring and mapping the sea floor in Alaska’s remote waters by the U.S. Geological Survey, and many contributions to scientific and geographical discoveries by the United States Coast Guard over the decades.

SHIP SPECIFICATIONS
Constructed of high-iron riveted steel, R/V Robert Gray resists corrosion much more effectively than newer and often less pure steel. She is powered by a Caterpillar D398 12 cylinder diesel single screw engine. The Army Corp of Engineers designed the hull curvatures to integrate with the propeller (78 in diameter) curvature. This results in maximum efficiency underway with fuel consumption of 10-14 GPH depending upon operation. She has a range of more than 5,000 nautical miles at optimal performance.
