The Voyagers CLUB UPDATE

After departing Colón, Panama on 8 March, R/V Robert Gray began the final stretch of the first leg of the c-NAMMs Expedition—a multi-day push toward the Bahamas and our eventual relocation to Charleston. Rolling seas, a changing crew, and intense wind swells made for an unforgettable passage.

Current Status & Next Steps

Heavy weather trailed us nearly the entire way. Over the course of 60 hours, RVRG encountered wind-driven swells that tossed gear and crew alike. Furniture shifted, water came over the bow, and bunks became launch pads during moments of zero gravity. Cooking was halted for safety, and movement around the ship required caution and camaraderie. With no communications available overnight, travel was limited to paired movement only.

During this chaotic stretch, the crew witnessed a glowing Falcon 9 launch from Kennedy Space Center and pushed through fatigue to complete Collection 005—a difficult nighttime operation with limited visibility and equipment stress from filter pressurization issues. Still, the job was done.

As we entered Caribbean waters, we navigated toward Jamaica and ultimately charted a course between Cuba and Haiti. This route allowed us to avoid areas off Honduras and Nicaragua known for pirate activity. En route, we were hailed by Avontuur—a 1920 schooner focused on sustainable cargo—who requested photos and radioed in for dialogue.

Seas calmed as we neared our next stop, giving the crew time to process zooplankton samples, enjoy some relief, and reflect on the journey thus far.

We’re proud to carry the flags of The Explorers Club, The Adventurers Club of Los Angeles, the GAC, and Voyagers Club as we continue our journey north.

Forward Together.
